{"id":12,"date":"2009-01-03T23:38:45","date_gmt":"2009-01-03T23:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/existentialmonkey.com\/blog\/?p=12"},"modified":"2019-01-27T05:44:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-27T11:44:00","slug":"the-first-step-is-to-admit-you-have-a-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/existentialmonkey.com\/blog\/the-first-step-is-to-admit-you-have-a-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"The first step is to admit you have a problem&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alright, fine.\u00a0 I admit it.\u00a0 I have a problem.\u00a0 We went to the monthly antique show (aka flea market, aka junk market) this morning and I bought a camera.\u00a0 And then I bought another one.\u00a0 And another one.\u00a0 And one more.\u00a0 Four total, but dang-it, I can use them all!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll get photos and put them up later.\u00a0\u00a0 But I got:<\/p>\n<p>#1 &#8211; Kodak Brownie Twin 20 in the box with a Supermite flash attachment, bulbs, instructions, etc.\u00a0 It looks like it&#8217;s never been used.\u00a0 The guy had it priced at $15, but before I could even say anything, he told me he&#8217;d take $10.\u00a0 You betcha.\u00a0 Sold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uberj\/3308485466\/in\/album-72157623386134881\/\" title=\"Kodak Brownie Twin 20\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3359\/3308485466_5161d09524.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" alt=\"Kodak Brownie Twin 20\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\n<p><!--more-->#2 &#8211; Herbert George Co. Imperial Debonair Cub Scouts of America version.\u00a0 In a booth with several other cameras that were desirable (to me), but overpriced.\u00a0 They had the Imperial priced at $15, with the flash attachment.\u00a0 Offered $10 and settled at $12, then the woman tells me she&#8217;s got the box if I want it.\u00a0 Well, yeah.\u00a0 It&#8217;s in bad shape she says.\u00a0 What else would I think she&#8217;d want to do with the box?\u00a0 So I do her a favor and take it too.\u00a0 I&#8217;m that kind of guy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uberj\/4389178912\/in\/album-72157623386134881\/\" title=\"Official Cub Scout Imperial Debonair\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2704\/4389178912_6c7f5b9a94.jpg\" width=\"332\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Official Cub Scout Imperial Debonair\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\n<p>#3 &#8211; The guy that has four lines of tables with each table piled with &#8220;stuff&#8221; priced by the table has a Sears 35mm SLR (Auto 35 TL) sitting on the $1 table.\u00a0 $1 I ask?\u00a0 $1 he confirms.\u00a0 Quick, painless, and now mine.\u00a0 Actually the nicest camera I bought today and I&#8217;m the least interested in it.\u00a0 I had visions of making a 35mm pinhole out of it, but then I figured out the lens is fixed.\u00a0 I guess that really puts the &#8220;single&#8221; in SLR.\u00a0 It&#8217;s only $1.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll get over it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uberj\/3308485540\/in\/album-72157623386134881\/\" title=\"Sears Auto 35 TL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3330\/3308485540_5395232473.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" alt=\"Sears Auto 35 TL\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\n<p>#4 &#8211; I find another booth with multiple cameras.\u00a0 They had a Sparta TLR that I thought I&#8217;d like, but the excessive clanking from inside kind of turned me off and the horridly bent viewfinder hood wasn&#8217;t doing it for me either.\u00a0 But they did have a plastic craptastic with box .\u00a0 This was the day of cameras in boxes &#8211; maybe that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m disappointed in the Sears 35mm &#8211; no box.\u00a0 Anyway, this one is a Birdseye Flash Camera, from the Birdseye Camera Corp. of Chicago, IL.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a 620, and comes with the flash attachment, complete with vintage Ray-O-Vac batteries.\u00a0 Very vintage, very leaky.\u00a0 Funny thing about this camera is the rear and the shutter mechanism are almost exactly like the Imperial (nee Herbert George Co.) Savoy I have.\u00a0 Comparing the instructions from the Birdseye to the Imperial Debonair manual, I find the miscellaneous stuff like &#8220;how to get good photos&#8221; and the guarantee are the same.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Exactly<\/span> the same.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure how the history of that happened, but it obviously did.\u00a0 I did a little web research and can&#8217;t find an answer, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merrillphoto.com\/Birdseye.htm\" target=\"blank\">I found someone else who noticed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uberj\/20164840091\/in\/album-72157623386134881\/\" title=\"Birdseye Flash Camera\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/528\/20164840091_8b210cb730.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" alt=\"Birdseye Flash Camera\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\n<p>So I admit it:\u00a0 I have a problem.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve accumulated a bunch of cameras over the last two years, but I don&#8217;t have a comprehensive system to keep track of them all.\u00a0 Twenty years from now I&#8217;d like to be able to access information about a specific camera from the database I keep planning to develop, but never make the time for.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve admitted my problem:\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have a system for keeping track of my cameras.\u00a0 There.\u00a0 What&#8217;s step two?<\/p>\n<p>Pictures at a later time.\u00a0 You can always keep an eye on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uberj\/\" target=\"blank\">my Flickr stream<\/a> just in case they show up there first.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alright, fine.\u00a0 I admit it.\u00a0 I have a problem.\u00a0 We went to the monthly antique show (aka flea market, aka junk market) this morning and I bought a camera.\u00a0 And then I bought another one.\u00a0 And another one.\u00a0 And one more.\u00a0 Four total, but dang-it, I can use them all!
